Bio | Hi. My name is James Culverhouse. I am a sea shanty artist from Perth, Western Australia.
I have performed alongside groups like the Lost Quays, the Sunset Coast Shanty Crew, the Irish Choir, and Warralakin, and artists like John Ralph and Helen Shanahan. I've performed at venues from the Cockburn Rotary Spring Fair, South Lakes Christmas Fair, at pubs like Clancy's Fish Pub, the Galway Hooker, the Pirate Bar, and the Irish Club of WA, and I have sung for the Bunbury Sea Shanty Festival, the Busselton and South West Heritage Festival, and the Dunsborough Songfest, the first two of which I have received awards for my songs from.
Are you tired or bored of the modern music like pop? Come bask in the old classics of folk through the medium of sea shanties and other famous traditional pieces.

My Songs:
-
Banks of Sacramento (Song 1) (Traditional) - A lively folk song/sea shanty rooted in the 19th century, often associated with the California Gold Rush. Sharing the melody of Camptown Races written in 1850 by Stephen Foster, both are known for their catchy "doo-dah" refrain and playful lyrics
The Wild Rover (Song 2) (Traditional) - A timeless tale of wandering ways and the return to virtue, The Wild Rover has echoed through taverns and fields for centuries. Have you heard it? Any lover of folk songs (Irish or otherwise) should have.
I Will Join the Navy (Song 3) (Original) - One of the first sea shanties I wrote and didn't scrap. Simple yet classic, capturing the story of an aspiring navy boy who meets a fatal ending, yet remains joyful through it all. This song has received a lot of attention throughout my time of performing it. It has been approved by honourary WAPPA graduate Helen Shanahan, received first place in the Bunbury Sea Shanty Festival Write Your Own Sea Shanty Competition, and performed by three other sea shanty bands at their own gigs. It is a piece I am immensely proud of, and a song I reckon would have done great as a traditional sea shanty. |
